theBoy dug out Connect Four. He's old enough now to grasp the rules. Before he just slotted the disks in as a fun distraction. So we pulled the old blue chair out from his room for the game table—a now backless four-legged with supporting struts paint splattered affair that came from somewhere in my deep childhood and that I have taken from house to house ever since I left home—and I, mounted on the Dr Evil chair faced off against him, he being mounted on his small-sized blue recliner he sits on during end-room Storyverse sessions.
Yes ... he's old enough to play games with. He's also able to take his bat and ball and go home. After I beat him for about the seventh time he calmly said 'No more games!', packed it up, and took it out of the room.
He did actually beat me a couple of times ... and once when I wasn't expecting it.

You'll be happy to hear that I've updated my Kinder rules a couple of times since the copy I gave to you. As soon as he's old enough to roll dice and add them together, we should get him and the other kids around a table for a game...

ReplyDeleteCan you email me a copy? It's easier to proof on-screen for me and I can leave natty little comment boxes by way of notes etc. But my initial read through was they were kewl.
I am going to try teaching a friend's kids the red set D&D. They're nine and seven, I think.
(Oh and yes for a game; we're already using probability in storytime in the bath. I chuck a toy and it depends which side lands up for the yes or no).
